Migrating from MDT-Integrated OSD to Native MECM Task Sequences: A Real-World Journey

Operating System Deployment (OSD) is often one of the most critical tasks performed by endpoint engineering teams. While Microsoft Configuration Manager (MECM) provides the deployment engine, technicians still need a simple, consistent, and reliable method for selecting deployment settings and ensuring devices are built according to organizational standards.

To address this challenge, I developed the Workplace Deployment Center, a PowerShell and WPF-based deployment wizard designed to simplify and standardize the device provisioning process.

  • The Challenge

In a large enterprise environment, deployment technicians frequently need to configure:

  • Deployment Region
  • Domain Assignment
  • Site Code
  • Keyboard Layout
  • Device Type
  • Computer Naming Standards

When these settings are manually entered, errors can occur and lead to:

  • Incorrect computer names
  • Wrong regional settings
  • Inconsistent deployments
  • Additional support effort after build completion

The goal was to provide a guided user experience that eliminates guesswork and enforces deployment standards.

  • Solution Overview

The Workplace Deployment Center provides a graphical deployment wizard that integrates directly with MECM Task Sequences.

The tool allows technicians to:

  • Select deployment region and domain
  • Choose the correct site code
  • Select keyboard layout
  • Automatically determine device type
  • Generate a compliant computer name
  • Validate configuration before deployment
  • Write deployment values to Task Sequence variables

The result is a faster, more accurate deployment process.

  • Key Features
  • Region-Based Deployment Configuration

The wizard supports multiple global regions including:

  • APAC
  • AMER
  • EMEA
  • INDIA
  • CHINA
  • JAPAN
  • UKI
  • DACH
  • NORDICS
  • LATAM
  • MIDDLE EAST
  • AFRICA
  • CANADA
  • USA

Each region contains its own domains and site codes, making selection simple and scalable.

  • Automatic Device Type Detection

Instead of asking technicians to identify the device type manually, the script automatically detects it using WMI.

Supported classifications include:

  • Desktop
  • Laptop
  • Notebook
  • Tablet
  • Virtual Machine

This helps ensure naming consistency while reducing manual input.

  • Automated Computer Name Generation

A unique computer name is generated automatically based on:

  • Site Code
  • Device Type
  • Hardware UUID-derived suffix

Example:

Plain Text

MUMP1234ABCD

 Benefits include:

  • Consistent naming standards
  • Reduced duplication risk
  • No dependency on serial number formatting

  • Keyboard Layout Management

The solution supports a wide range of international keyboard layouts including:

  • English (US)
  • English (UK)
  • German
  • French
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • And many more

The selected keyboard layout is stored as a Task Sequence variable for later use during the deployment process.

  • Live Deployment Summary

As selections are made, a deployment summary panel updates in real time.

The summary displays:

  • Region
  • Domain
  • Site Code
  • Keyboard Layout
  • Deployment Profile
  • Generated Hostname

This provides immediate feedback and helps technicians validate their selections before proceeding.

  • Deployment Confirmation Screen

Before deployment begins, a confirmation window displays all selected values.

This additional verification step helps prevent accidental misconfiguration and provides a final review opportunity.

Configured values include:

  • Region
  • Domain
  • Site Code
  • Keyboard Layout
  • Hostname

Only after confirmation does the deployment continue.

  • Task Sequence Integration

One of the primary design goals was seamless MECM integration.

The wizard writes deployment values directly into Task Sequence variables such as:

Plain Text

Device-Site-Code

Device-Domain

Device-Type

Keyboard-Layout

Region

OSDComputerName

ComputerName

These variables can then be consumed later in the deployment workflow for:

  • Domain Join
  • Language Configuration
  • Regional Settings
  • Dynamic Application Installation
  • Device Naming

  • Built-In Device Inventory Collection

The solution also gathers device inventory information during execution, including:

  • Manufacturer
  • Model
  • Serial Number
  • UUID
  • Chassis Type
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Disk Information
  • MAC Address
  • TPM Status

This information is written to deployment logs for troubleshooting and auditing purposes.

  • Enterprise Logging

A dedicated logging framework captures:

  • Deployment selections
  • Hardware inventory
  • Validation results
  • Task Sequence variable assignments
  • Deployment workflow status

All logs are stored in the MECM task sequence log location for easy review.

Example:

Plain Text

========== DEPLOYMENT CONFIGURATION ==========

Region: INDIA

Domain: PUNE

Site Code: MUM

Keyboard Layout: En-US

Asset Type: Laptop

Hostname: MUMP1234ABCD

==============================================

  • User Experience Improvements

The wizard was designed with an enterprise-focused user interface emphasizing:

  • Clean Microsoft-style design
  • Blue corporate branding
  • Guided workflow
  • Clear validation messages
  • Simplified selection process
  • Real-time deployment summary

The result is a professional deployment experience that minimizes training requirements for deployment technicians.

  • Benefits

By implementing the Workplace Deployment Center, organizations can achieve:

  • Standardized MECM deployments
  • Reduced configuration errors
  • Faster technician onboarding
  • Improved deployment consistency
  • Automated hostname generation
  • Better reporting and auditability
  • Enhanced end-user device provisioning experience

  • Conclusion

The Workplace Deployment Center demonstrates how PowerShell, WPF, and MECM can be combined to create a simple yet powerful deployment experience. By automating device classification, computer naming, regional configuration, and Task Sequence integration, the solution helps ensure every deployment is performed in a consistent, compliant, and efficient manner.

Developed and Designed by Dashrath Chate, this tool serves as a practical example of how custom deployment engineering solutions can improve operational efficiency while maintaining enterprise deployment standards.
